Renal Disease

Renal disease, also known as kidney disease, occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter blood effectively. This leads to the buildup of waste products, excess fluids, and imbalances in electrolytes, which can affect overall health. Renal disease may be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-term and progressive).

Treatments

Medications – To control blood pressure, blood sugar, and reduce protein leakage in urine.
Dialysis – A procedure to remove waste and excess fluid when kidneys cannot function properly.
Lifestyle Modifications – Healthy diet, controlled salt and fluid intake, and avoiding smoking/alcohol.
Surgical Procedures – Placement of dialysis access (catheters or fistulas) if required.
Kidney Transplant – In severe cases of end-stage renal disease.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

Swelling in legs, ankles, or face
Fatigue and weakness
Difficulty urinating or changes in urine output
Shortness of breath
Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite

Causes:

Diabetes and high blood pressure (most common causes)
Polycystic kidney disease
Kidney infections or obstruction (stones, enlarged prostate)
Autoimmune conditions like lupus
Prolonged use of certain medications

Prevention

Maintain healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels
Stay hydrated and eat a kidney-friendly diet
Avoid excessive use of painkillers and over-the-counter medicines
Regular health check-ups for early detection
Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight
